What makes a pivot door different
A pivot door turns on a pivot set in the floor and the head, instead of hinges on the side. This allows tall and wide door leaves that would be too heavy for ordinary hinges, and gives the entrance a strong architectural look. See our aluminium pivot doors.
Five decisions to make early
- Size: height and width set the weight and the pivot hardware needed.
- Pivot position: an offset pivot gives a wider clear passage; a centre pivot splits the opening.
- Finish: powder-coated colours, wood-effect and decorative panels or patterns.
- Locking and access: multi-point locks, smart locks, keypads or fingerprint readers.
- Weather side: an exposed entrance needs good seals and a canopy or overhang where possible.
Plan the opening before the door
Pivot doors need a level floor, a strong head and a floor recess for the pivot. These are easiest to prepare during construction or renovation, before the final flooring is laid.
Frequently asked questions
Can a pivot door replace an existing entrance door?
