What a thermal break is
Aluminium conducts heat well. In a non-thermal profile, the inner and outer parts of the frame are one piece of metal, so heat from the outside passes straight through. In a thermal-break profile, an insulating strip separates the inner and outer parts, reducing the heat that travels through the frame.
Where it is worth paying for
- Air-conditioned bedrooms, living rooms and offices.
- Large glazed areas facing south or west.
- Projects where energy use or comfort near the glass matters.
For service areas, stores or spaces that are not air-conditioned, a non-thermal profile is often a reasonable choice.
The glass matters as much as the frame
Most of a window is glass. Insulated double glazing and solar-control coatings have a large effect on heat gain. A thermal frame with single clear glass will not perform like a complete thermal window.
Installation completes the job
Gaps between the frame and the wall let hot air and dust in. Correct sealing and fixing are part of thermal performance, which is why we fabricate and install the systems we supply.
Frequently asked questions
Which systems offer thermal versions?
Thermal and non-thermal options are available across our aluminium systems, including Qalex, Alumil and Schüco lines.
Can I upgrade only some windows?
Yes. Many clients use thermal profiles for air-conditioned rooms and non-thermal ones elsewhere.
